Interior & Exterior Painting
Most paint failures are preparation failures. Paint applied over a chalky, damp or unsanded surface will peel no matter how good the paint is. We spend the time on prep, then apply proper coats.
The Problem
Paint fails at the edges first.
A cheap paint job looks excellent for about a season. Then the edges lift, the sheen goes blotchy over patched areas, and you are looking at the same job again with the old coating to strip first.
What the job includes
- Surfaces washed, scraped, sanded and de-glossed
- Cracks filled and gaps caulked before priming
- Stains and bare substrate spot-primed so they do not bleed through
- Two finish coats as standard
- Cut lines done by hand
- Furniture moved and covered, site left clean daily
How It Goes
Step by step.
- 01
Prepare the surface
Washing, scraping, sanding and de-glossing. On exteriors this also means letting the substrate dry properly. Painting over damp siding traps moisture and guarantees peeling.
- 02
Fill and caulk
Cracks, nail holes and dents get filled and sanded flush. Gaps around trim and penetrations get caulked, which on an exterior is as much about keeping water out as it is about looks.
- 03
Prime where it matters
Bare substrate, patched areas and anything liable to bleed through gets spot-primed. Water stains, tannin-rich wood and marker are the usual culprits. Priming everything is rarely necessary; priming nothing always shows.
- 04
Apply two coats
Two full finish coats, back-rolled where sprayed, so color and sheen stay even across patched and unpatched areas alike.
- 05
Walk it with you
We go around the finished work with you in daylight and touch up anything you point at before we pack up.
Questions
Interior & Exterior Painting: what people ask.
Is one coat ever enough?
Only when repainting the identical color onto a sound, clean surface. Any color change, any patching, any bare substrate needs two. One coat over those dries to an uneven sheen even where the color looks right.
What time of year can you paint outside?
Most exterior coatings need surface and air temperatures to stay above roughly 50°F, including overnight, and the surface must be dry. In Idaho that realistically means late spring through early autumn. We will tell you if it is too late in the season rather than paint something that peels by spring.
Do you supply the paint?
We can supply it or apply paint you have bought. If you are choosing, tell us the room and the surface and we will tell you what sheen actually survives there.
